If you descend to street level then you can't afford to stay there for long, because exposure saps your stamina and eventually your health. Once the dust falls, as well as bluffing and climbing your way around old hospitals, hotels and unfinished apartment blocks, you're constantly balancing the need to push forward against the need to get above the cloud by climbing drainpipes, scaffolding and advertising billboards. I Am Alive is not completely without its own ideas either, like a thick, choking dust that storms through the city early on and remains for the rest of the game. Before long, you curse yourself for having to use a bullet, no matter the situation. The writing is clichéd (at one point, someone tells you to hang onto your dignity and integrity because that's all we have left) but it's all part of a convincing scenario. One of the best characters is a little girl called Mei, a toddler who is brought to life on screen by superb animation and voice acting. I won't explain what happens, but not everyone you meet is an adversary or a bonus objective. It's often chilling, but never gratuitous, even when things get really serious.Īt least you're not always alone. One of them is being used as bait to lure you in, another wants a last cigarette before dying and one of them - a young girl - is bound up and about to be raped when you intervene. The developers aren't shy about how horrible things will probably be when everything turns to rust and ash, and they usually express their thoughts using the 20 other survivors you can optionally locate and save throughout the adventure. What I Am Alive lacks in originality, though, it makes up for in execution, because it really nails the tone.
